Update on the Most Anticipated of 2014

December 21, 2014 Bookish 2

Hi! It’s my favourite time of the year – where I get to make lists of everything I want to read next year!! I’m going to take a trip down memory lane today and show you last year’s list, with comments on how I went with those books. And next week I’ll share my picks for Most Anticipated Books of 2015 🙂

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer

This was brilliant. Cress and Thorne are great protagonists and their story is a wonderful spin on the tradition Rapunzel fairy-tale. Cress was trapped in a satellite by the evil Queen Levana and the criminally inclined Thorne is part of her rescue mission.

Shimmer (The Rephaim #3) by Paula Weston

This was one of my favourite reads of the year. Gabe’s really growing into herself and the stakes keep getting higher. And Rafa keeps stealing my heart.

Broken (The Avena #2) by Marianne Curley

This was a great sequel to Hidden and I loved the dual-point-of-view which meant I was in Thane’s head as well as Ebony’s.

Wall of Spears (Empire of Bones #3) by Duncan Lay

A wonderful concluding volume to one of the most underrated fantasy series of all time.

The Emperor’s Blades (Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne #1) by Brian Stavely

A surprisingly strong début featuring the three children of an emperor, one a monk, one an assassin, and one a lady at court, who must deal with the turmoil caused by the murder of their father. Wonderful characters and very slow story-telling, ultimately let down by the characterisation of the women in the story.

The Forever Song (Blood of Eden #3) by Julie Kagawa

The concluding volume of this series did not disappoint.

This Shattered World (Starbound #2) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

A new adventure with a new star-crossed couple – Lee and Flynn stole my heart.

Unmade (The Lynburn Legacy #3) by Sarah Rees Brennan

This was heart-breaking and brilliant.

Every Word (Every #2) by Ellie Marney

Watts and Mycroft are back! In addition to their dark and dangerous adventures in London, I loved how these former best-friends navigated their fledgling relationship.

Sinner (Wolves of Mercy Falls #4) by Maggie Stiefvater

Cole and Isabel’s story was incredible, but Sinner leaned towards contemporary romance than I’d anticipated.

Ignite Me (The Juliette Chronicles #3) by Tahereh Mafi

A very disappointing story in which I hated almost everything. No love for Ignite Me.

Altered (Crewel World #2) by Gennifer Albin

Unfortunately Faber & Faber, who had the Australian rights to the series (maybe they had UK+Commonwealth rights?) have “no plans” to publish Altered or Unraveled. I’ll have to source the US versions.

The Galaxy Game by Karen Lord, Illuminae (Illuminae #1) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, Shadow Scale (Seraphina #2) by Rachel Hartman, and The Girl with the Windup Heart (Steampunk Chronicles #4) by Kady Cross

The Galaxy Game will be out in early 2015, Illuminae is slated for release in September 2015, and Shadow Scale will be released in March 2015. I haven’t seen The Girl with the Windup Heart anywhere – it looks like the ebook is available but the paperback will be out in February 2015.

Crash (Twinmaker #2) by Sean Williams, Sunrise (Ashfall #3) by Mike Mullin, The Cracks in the Kingdom (The Colors of Madeleine #2) by Jaclyn Moriarty, The Broken Eye (Lightbringer #3) by Brent Weeks, Silver Shadows (Blooodlines #5) by Richelle Mead

I HAVE THESE! Why haven’t I read them yet!?

Words of Radiance (The Stormlight Archive #2) by Brandon Sanderson

I’m still making my way through this behemoth. I started it in February. I’m LOVING IT, I just don’t want it to end so I’m reading a few chapters a week.

I think I went pretty well with last year’s Most Anticipating list. It’s odd that so few of these made it into my list of the Best of 2014 but I think that says something about me and my expectations!
