Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living – one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers’ arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.

Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon’s secret temple and dreamed of a world that was a like a jewel-box without a jewel – a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness.

This was not that world.

I’m continuing my newfound love affair with audio books, following up on the gorgeousness that was Daughter of Smoke and Bone with Days of Blood and Starlight.

Again, I’ve been absolutely blown away by the experience. Khristine Hvam narrates this complex and beautiful take superbly. I loved the voices she gave the characters. Especially Zuzana. She captures the hurt and loss felt by both Karou and Akiva brilliantly. I feel like the really gets the story, the characters, and the world.

It took me much longer to complete Days than Daughter did because of personal circumstances. But I found it incredibly easy to immerse myself back into the story every time I came back to it. All I had to do was rewind 60 seconds, and I was right there, back with Karou or Akiva or Zuzana or Ziri, ready to follow them into their next adventure.

There isn’t, admittedly, much I can say that I haven’t already said in my review of the paperback version of this story. It’s still a harrowing, haunting, and beautiful tale of two people, two worlds, two futures. These books have always been addictive, and are no less so in the audiobook format. I’ll be eagerly returning to this world to experience Dreams of Gods and Monsters in audio format soon!
