A dreamer is born – the exhilarating prequel to the ground-breaking, extraordinary Bone Season series.

In the perilous heart of Scion London, a dangerous and valuable poltergeist is on the loose – and it must be caught before chaos erupts on the streets of the capital. Here, the clairvoyant underworld plays by its own rules, and rival gangs will stop at nothing to win such a magnificent prize.

Sixteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working for Jaxon Hall, the most notorious mime-lord in the city. He thinks she is hiding a powerful gift, but it refuses to surface. Maybe this is the opportunity she needs to secure her position in his gang, the Seven Seals…

The Pale Dreamer gives us a glimpse of Paige’s life before we met her in The Bone Season, taking us on an adventure through London after some poltergeists. It’s an excellent entry point for readers who are interested in The Bone Season series and want to give it a try.

As usual, Shannon paints her world vividly, an impressive feat in such a short piece. London’s history is folded seamlessly into the world of Scion. Rather than being a filler until The Song Rising comes out, the novella fills in some gaps in our knowledge and gives us an awesome story to boot!

It’s fascinating to see Jaxon, Nick and Eliza through Paige’s eyes as she earns her place in the Seven Seals. I enjoyed learning about Nick’s past the most and found Paige’s insecurity about her worth and place within the gang heartbreaking. I also liked seeing Paige’s relationship with Nick – her infatuation is so realistically painted that it’s almost embarrassing.

I loved The Pale Dreamer. It was great to get return to the world of Scion, albeit briefly, and I think I’ll be rereading the series soon. This novella should not be missed by fans of The Bone Season, and I encourage fans who haven’t tried the books to give the novella a go. Who knows, you might find a new favourite!
