The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people’s minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing.

It is raining the day her life changes for ever. Attacked, drugged and kidnapped, Paige is transported to Oxford – a city kept secret for two hundred years, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. Paige is assigned to Warden, a Rephaite with mysterious motives. He is her master. Her trainer. Her natural enemy. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die.

Unsurprisingly, the book is still amazing. I re-read The Bone Season before The Mime Order was released so I felt that a lot of it was still fresh, but this was still a useful exercise. It’s great to meet the characters and see them from Paige’s eyes, especially knowing the roles they will later play.

I think I have a greater understanding of Warden — many of the things he says and does while mentoring Paige made more sense with the context of his revelations in The Mime Order. Seeing Jaxon is also interesting because he exists solely in Paige’s memories and the reality of him is sometimes quite different. I also feel I have a better understanding of the history of Scion, again because I’ve read The Mime Order and can put things into context.

I’m excited to re-read The Mime Order and revisit this world before The Song Rising is released. The richness and complexity of this world is such that I discover new things every time I pick one of them up!
