Early Bird Preview: A Thousand Pieces of You

August 27, 2014 Bookish 2 ★★★★★

Hello! Today I’m kicking off a new feature called “Early Bird Preview”. Don’t laugh at the name, my husband and I brainstormed it in the ten minutes we had spare between looking at curtains and organising movers.

The idea is that I wax lyrical about an ARC that I’ve been lucky enough to read, without actually reviewing it. It will hopefully encourage more people to pre-order it and look out for it when it does hit the shelves. Then the proper review will follow a few weeks before the book is released.

I love the idea of showcasing a book without a review, but I’ve stopped doing Waiting on Wednesday posts because they feel a little impersonal. It’s always the same thing: here’s a book, its cover, it’s synopsis, and I’m really excited to read it.

I like to think of this website as for reviewers AND readers, and very early reviews seem to only help other reviewers: by the time a book is released the reviewers are already into other books. But sometimes I read books where it physically hurts not to talk about it as soon as I have finished it.

The “ARC Previews with your coffee” part means that these posts will be short and sweet – able to be read while you drink your morning or afternoon coffee. Well, not this one since I’ve already babbled for ages …

A Thousand Pieces of You

I’ve picked Claudia Gray’s A Thousand Pieces of You as the first book I’m going to try this with. I’ve just finished it and it was amazing!

Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for their radical scientific achievements. Their most astonishing invention: the Firebird, which allows users to jump into parallel universes, some vastly altered from our own. But when Marguerite’s father is murdered, the killer—her parent’s handsome and enigmatic assistant Paul—escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.

Marguerite can’t let the man who destroyed her family go free, and she races after Paul through different universes, where their lives entangle in increasingly familiar ways. With each encounter she begins to question Paul’s guilt—and her own heart. Soon she discovers the truth behind her father’s death is more sinister than she ever could have imagined.

This book has gotten a bit of attention already because of the gorgeous cover, and I’m very excited to report that insides match the lovely outsides.

You’ll Love This Because …

The protagonist, Marguerite, is super-awesome. She’s smart and brave and caring. I think readers will love her. She has awesome relationships with her family and friends, and she’s kind of become my hero.

Her parents are physicists. There is SCIENCE in this book 😀 And the science is internally consistent!

The book is about alternate dimensions and dimension-hopping. As if that could ever be boring. The author creates vivid alternate realities that I absolutely delighted in.

The plot will keep you guessing. Even if you guess the general gist of what’s going on, the intricacies will blow you away!

There’s a swoon-worthy love interest. There’s barely a hint of a love-triangle. And and and and. There’s sex. Not like graphic sex or anything, but neither the protagonist nor the author shy away from the realities of love and sexual attraction. It is beautifully done.

A Thousand Pieces of You is the first book in the Firebird series by Claudia Gray and will be available from HarperCollins Australia in November 2014. Pre-order it guys, you do not want to miss out on this epic adventure.
