Two years before Beatrice Prior makes her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation's faction leader does the same. Tobias's transfer to Dauntless is his chance to begin again. Newly renamed "Four" he discovers that initiation is only the beginning ...

Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. And his decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future - and the future of the entire faction system.

Two years later, Four is poised to act but the course is till unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world may become clear. With her it might become possible to become Tobias again.

I love Four. This collection of short-stories is just the fix I needed. This Divergent Collection includes the short stories The Transfer, The Initiate, The Son, and The Traitor, as well as key moments from Divergent.

The Transfer

I open my palm over the coals. I feel like they’re burning in my stomach, filling me to the brim with fire and smoke. I am free.

We pick up with Tobias as he finishes his Aptitude Test, and follow him as the makes the life-changing decision to join Dauntless. I loved being inside his head and getting a better look into Abnegation life. I think Tobias described the Abnegation lifestyle slightly better than Tris, because Tris could only see how restrictive it was, but Tobias sees that it could be a refuge for anyone but himself.

One of the best parts was seeing the first train ride Tobias makes as a Dauntless initiate. I loved this part of Tris’s journey and it was just as excited to be with Tobias as he jumped on the train, jumped on the roof, and then jumped into the Dauntless compound.

The Initiate

Here, I’ve learned to defend myself, I’ve learned to be stronger, but the one thing I haven’t learned, won’t let myself learn, is how to enjoy causing someone else pain.

It’s been a week since the end of The Transfer, and we catch up with Four as he fights his way through the Dauntless initiation. It’s a different process than what Tris went through, so this part was exciting.

The story allows readers to explore the person Four fundamentally is: someone who doesn’t want to hurt others, who isn’t comfortable with most human interactions, who doesn’t even know how to go about making friends. The person Tris sees when she meets him is quite different from this Four (of course, she’s seeing him from the outside, but here we’re privy to all his fears and doubts).

Amar is really cool, a great instructor! Although I knew about him from Allegiant, it’s great to actually see him and Four form their bond.

The Son

It’s easier now, in Dauntless black, than it ever was in Abnegation gray, and maybe that’s why I chose Dauntless as a haven. Not out of spite, not to hurt Marcus, but because I knew this life would teach me a stronger way to be.

The rankings are out, and Four is put on the leadership track by Mac, along with Eric and a few other promising Dauntless members. This story takes us through how Four uncovered the alliance between Dauntless and Erudite and how he ended up training the initiates.

The coolest part of The Son is that readers get an inside look at how Dauntless is run. We never got to see the inner workings of the faction in the main series because Tris didn’t even get the opportunity to get a job placement. But with Four, we explore the control room and find out about how the leadership works.

Another great thing: we see Four on a date! It was hilarious. It’s worth getting this book for those two pages, I promise you. He’s still got the Abnegation aversion to touching and wants to respect girls by not touching them (not even making eye contact with them), but he also knows that Dauntless is his new life now and he should make an effort to fit in. To assimilate.

The Traitor

I can’t be a pawn. But I’m not sure what I should be instead.

The Traitor takes place during Divergent. It begins on Tris’s Visiting day, and gives us tantalising glimpses of Four’s feelings for her, as well as taking us deeper into the scheme Erudite and Dauntless have cooked up.

We see some key moments in Divergent from Four’s eyes, including the attack on Edward, Tris’s trips into her fear landscape, the attack on Tris, and then Four’s point of view as he takes her through his fear landscape. They’re all key moments in their relationship and it’s wonderful to experience them through his eyes. I think this is my favourite story in the collection for this reason.

Exclusive Scenes

The end of this book has three exclusive scenes from Divergent written in Four’s point of view. “First Jumper – Tris” shows us the time first time Four and Tris met; “Careful, Tris” takes us through the introductory tour that Four gives the transfers, and the dinner that follows; and in “You look good, Tris” we get to see the time when Four was drunk and sort of hit on Tris. They’re all short, cute scenes, and I read them with a huge grin on my face!

Fans of Veronica Roth’s Four will love this collection of stories about our favourite Dauntless man. It’s brought a new dimension to a series that will always hold a special place in my heart.

I loved reading about Four and Tris. So this is going to be a must read for me. Plus I love the Aus book cover. HarperCollins AU cover artist really did a fantastic job with it. What cover do you like more Shaheen? I also wanted to let you know that I have pinned your giveaway to my Australian Giveaways & Samples board on Pinterest 🙂 Fingers crossed it will get you a few extra views.

I have always loved the Australian/UK children’s covers (like the one I’ve used for FOUR at the top of the post). There’s so much detail in them – at first they look like simple covers with silhouettes but there’s a lot going on in the backgrounds. And they’re illustrated, which is always a win with me. I did get to choose which version of FOUR I gave away, however, and I chose the UK adult cover because that seems to be the one most people prefer.

Thank you so much for sharing the link 😀 You’re awesome <3
