Covens Rising: Episode 2 by Adina West

Covens Rising: Episode 2 by Adina West

July 31, 2014 Reviews 2 ★★★½

Having read The Awakening, I have a better appreciation for what's happening in this series now.

We left Kat at the end of Episode 1 hiding from the Big Bad Directorate in Paris, away from her Unalil protectors, and getting along with Dominic, who works for the Directorate. In this one episode she meets with Dominic's employer, and makes a few new friends. Meanwhile, Ben is gearing up to approach Yara about the secret they both share (also, I understand why she's so important now, her father is Very Important).

I didn't understand Kat's motivations in this episode. She met...

The Awakening is an enjoyable read, but honestly nothing like I’d expected it to be! It is, however, essential reading if you’re thinking of picking up Coven’s Rising, and I think fans of paranormal stories will like it.

Kalona’s Fall by P.C. and Kristin Cast

July 24, 2014 Reviews 4 ★½

P.C Cast and Kristin Cast have been writing full length novels since 2007 (I did a Goodreads search), so there is really no excuse for how poorly written this novella is. The dialogue is artificial, the storytelling confused, and the novella comes across as laboured.

Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

July 15, 2014 Reviews 1 ★★

Ridley’s voice is so strong and bratty as she describes her state of mind and the rules she lives by. But you can see, even in the first few pages, that the way she sees herself is changing and that she’s desperately trying to cling onto a persona that might not fit her anymore.

Razorhurst is a brilliantly crafted story that will keep you flipping pages until the wee hours of the morning, despite being slightly lighter in speculative fiction elements than what I usually read.

I have absolutely loved reading Shimmer, and can’t praise The Rephaim series highly enough. This book won’t disappoint fans of the vivid world that Weston has created with an Australian backdrop!

I didn’t go into Half Bad with any preconceived notions about it and was pleasantly surprised by the strong storytelling and characterisation. I think the world needs to be expanded on, but overall, this is an engaging, compelling read.

while I enjoyed Evertrue, I think it could have been a stronger book, and it’s particularly disappointing because it hasn’t ended the Everneath series on a strong note. I’m impressed by what Ashton has tried to achieve with the book, but I think it could have been better executed.
