Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

The story-telling in this series keeps getting better. I was sucked into this book from the first chapter, and found myself reading it hungrily in large chunks. While the action moved slowly, it was driven by character development. Prince Regal’s scheming allowed the climax to build steadily, with the author dropping hints and foreshadowing events before adding a twist that changes everything.

Fitz grew amazingly throughout the book, and made some very difficult decisions. His age and position as the King’s assassin led the relationships he has to change. Suddenly people are looking up to him, asking his advice and...

Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb

Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb

As usual with Robin Hobb, this story is rich in detail and has empathetic, believable characters. The politics of the world were clear and the sense of place was strong. Reading about Fitz as he grew up and slowly found acceptance within the royal household was fascinating for me since life in…

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

When I first heard about Cinder, I was sceptical. I haven’t had positive experiences with retellings of fairytales, and a retelling of Cinderella with a cyborg Cinderella sounds silly to me. Once I started reading the book, I found that it isn’t the same calibre as most of the YA…

The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson

The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson

January 24, 2012 Reviews 0 ★★★★

It was great to return to Scandrial and the Mistborn universe in this novel, which shows how the planet has changed over three hundred years. Religions and cults have formed around the lenegendary figures of the original trilogy, and technology has progressed greatly over the years. The development of the…

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson never fails to deliver on amazing world building and I was, as usual, astounded by the level of detail he puts into his writing. Everything, including the speech, mannerisms and military styles of the kingdoms is meticulously described and self consistent. The world is rich in detail –…

Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

Inheritance certainly delivers as the long awaited ending to the Inheritance Cycle. The final battle with Galbatorix and the fate of Alagaësia following it is examined well in the book, and I never felt the ending was forced. There were a few surprises when I was reading the book, but that’s…

The High Lord by Trudi Canavan

The High Lord by Trudi Canavan

A wonderful climax to a spellbinding trilogy, The High Lord lived up to all my expectations. It is a great culmination of Sonea’s adventures as the only slum dweller to be accepted into the ranks of the Magician’s Guild. Canavan’s storytelling is brilliant and makes it easy for readers to…

The Magician’s Guild by Trudi Canavan

This is a light, entertaining book that I enjoyed reading. The action takes place mainly in the slums of Kyralia and the Magician’s Guild, both of which were wonderfully realised. While there wasn’t a strong sense of place in the book because only the two of these places was described…

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

September 12, 2011 Reviews 0 ★★★★

Reading Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn trilogy spurred me to read his earlier works. Elantris is his debut novel (released in 2005), and I found it to be every bit as engaging and wonderful as I expected. High Priest Hrathen of Shu Derethi, the militaristic religion underlying the power of Fjorden, is…
