Tarver still has nightmares about the night, six months before the Icarus crash, when he rescued a group of civilian researchers being held hostage by brutal mercenaries. Now Tarver and Lilac must reconcile his memories of that fateful night with the truth that they uncovered on a mysterious planet after the Icarus crashed.

You should read this because Tarver is perfect.

There. Review done. Off you go, clicky click.

This Night So Dark tells us how Tarver became a Major in the army, and why he was all over the news when we met him in These Broken Stars. Tarver and Lilac, who are living together after the events of These Broken Stars, are talking about that eventful night because Tarver still has nightmares about it. And in the retelling, they realise that those events are connected to the crash of the Icarus and all that happened afterwards.

Kaufman and Spooner’s writing style, which I loved so much in These Broken Stars, is again just … beautiful. It reminded me of why I loved These Broken Stars so much when other, similar stories get the ‘too-much-romantic-focus’ stamp from me. If you’re unsure about this series, this story will be the best place to start to see if you like the writing and the world.

It was amazing being back with Tarver, because Oh-My-Gosh I just love him so much and any time spent inside his head is time well spent. My fan-girling aside, This Night So Dark also brilliantly re-orients readers in the Starbound world and reminds readers of the main plot developments of the first book so we don’t necessarily have to go back and read it again before starting This Shattered World. Of course, that doesn’t stop us from re-reading it because it’s my precious and none of you are allowed near him. It.

This Night So Dark also comes with extended (a handful of chapters each) previews of These Broken Stars and This Shattered World. I re-read the beginning of These Broken Stars and could vividly remember how excited and jittery I was when I first read it, and then I delved into the preview of This Shattered World. Jubilee and Flynn have already made their mark on me, and I think I will enjoy their story just as much as I enjoyed Lilac and Tarver’s (OMG I got an eARC!!).

So, it’s about Tarver, it’s set after These Broken Stars, it gets readers to up to speed on what’s been going on in the Starbound world, and it includes previews of the full length novels in the series. What else can I tell you about This Night So Dark? Oh yes, it’s FREE.

There are no excuses now. Resistance is futile. Scroll up and click away.
